What started off as a fairly good year, filled with positive thoughts in fact turned into a nightmare for people all over the world. In South Africa, the virus took a while to reach our shores, but the inevitable happened. It seems that most countries have reached their peak, but in SA it is said the virus will only reach its peak in August or September 2020.
Nevertheless, as an artist, I often paint what is on my mind – what I absorb from the news of the day, etc. When I started this drawing it was simply going to be a woman in felt-tip pen. The stars in the painting indicate a good mood and positive thoughts.
So, I made a positive start, however, towards the end of the drawing, Covid 19 had crept into my mind. It just shows one how news, which is usually upsetting, plays on the mind.
The next thing, I whipped out a sheet of white paper and I added the mask. The detail on the mask I will not explain. This is an art post and the image is self-explanatory. I will just say that the virus is ‘covered up’ in mystery. I leave it to those in the know to come up with truthful, educated answers.
My thoughts evolved further into this final drawing. The woman without the mask, looking at herself with the mask. Just a reminder, that underneath this vicious virus, the woman still maintains her identity. This will not be lost to the enemy trying its best to make her fearful of the future. The cross on her forehead is her faith. She believes in a God, so much bigger than the virus. He will raise up a standard and bring this to an end.
4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” Psalm 91. 4-6.
